Ask a Librarian

The library of the American College of Sofia occupies a large space of about 300 square meters. Along with approximately 15,000 volumes, there are 13 computers for student use, which are connected to the local school network and the internet.

Students can peruse various CDs and online subscriptions, including up-to-date ProQuest SKS articles, encyclopedias, Turnitin.com, Noodletools.com, and other resources. During the 2009-2010 school year the library is subscribed to the ProQuest SKS online full-text articles database. This database presents articles from over 1,800 magazines and newspapers for a period exceeding 10 years.

Additionally, the library subscribes to 8 paper magazines (Newsweek, Scientific American, Time, The Economist, National Geographic, Discover, Seventeen, and 8 Magazine)

The library also houses a 2,140 volume collection of historical books, called the Rila Collection, due to the fact that some of the old ACS books were hidden for safekeeping in the Rila Monastery for over 50 years during the communist era.

It is a tradition for students to help librarians with making photocopies and shelving books and magazines as well as other everyday necessities. There are about 15 to 20 students for each school year who volunteer their free time as library interns.

The library is a place for student exhibitions and presentations. Here an opportunity is presented to students with different hobbies to share their interests with other students and members of the faculty. In addition, different clubs organize meetings and lectures that meet here with professionals from outside the college.

Library resources are tied to the curriculum and constantly expanding. The library strives to create an atmosphere of serious learning within a friendly and helpful environment.
